SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO – April was Distracted Driving Awareness Month. The main target of this endeavor is to prevent drivers from using their cell phones while they drive.
The larger aim is “to educate the public on the dangers of distracted driving.” Lieutenant Keith Wall reminded the public that “it’s careless, dangerous and illegal. Drivers should keep their eyes on the road, not their phone.”
The most recent law, begun in 2017, prohibits drivers from having a phone in their hand. Only hand’s free devices are allowed. A first-time offender of this law pays a $162 fine.
It not only involves making or receiving calls on a cell phone. It also includes use of GPS or checking texts. Such behavior is also determined to be using a cell phone while you drive.
The South San Francisco Police Department suggests putting your phone in a place where you can’t reach it, such as the backseat or trunk. They also remind the public that other distracting behaviors include eating, grooming, reaching for fallen objects, adjusting the radio and, yes, changing clothes.
