Sex offender arrested after found living near school

The San Luis Obispo Sheriff’s Department arrested a SLO county sex offender on Tuesday for failing to report his correct address.

According to the sheriff’s department, they received information regarding a registered sex offender, Francis Stanley Costa, 68, who was living at a residence in Oceano. Sheriffs say this information conflicted with the California Megan’s Law Web site, which had Costa registered as a transient. Costa had been registering for the past few years as a transient sex offender with the San Luis Obispo Police Department.

Detectives from the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office and the San Luis Obispo Police Department drove to Oceano and located Costa living at a residence in the 1700 block of Paso Robles Street. Sheriffs say Costa admitted he knew he was not registering properly, but chose to drive to the city of San Luis Obispo and register as a transient because the house he was living in was too close to an elementary school. Costa lived across the street from a school.

Sheriffs say Costa has a prior conviction for attempted lewd acts with a child under the age of 14. He was arrested and booked into the county jail for failing to register his residence with law enforcement.
