CLEARLAKE OAKS — Authorities in Lake County have announced the identification of a suspect in connection to the disappearance of 25-year-old Grant David Whitaker, a missing person from Mackinaw, IL.
Whitaker had reportedly been involved in an altercation with 21-year-old Mavrick William Fisher of Elko, NV — with whom he’d been traveling — at a campground in Humboldt County, and his family had not heard from him since.
Sheriff’s Deputies received a report that a stolen vehicle associated with Whitaker may have been seen near the Dollar General Store in Clearlake Oaks. The vehicle was later impounded and secured for processing.
On the evening of August 25, the Sheriff’s Office learned that Fisher had admitted to killing Whitaker and that he’d provided detailed directions on the location of his body.
Officials with the Major Crimes Unit served a search warrant at the location, a property in Upper Lake, and located Whitaker’s remains in a remote area near the 7500 block of Scott’s Valley Road.
Later that day, authorities in Rosarito, Mexico, contacted the Sheriff’s Office to say that had contacted Fisher and connected him to Whitaker’s disappearance. Both agencies are working together to see that he is returned and taken into custody.
