Drive-by shooting leaves five injured

FRESNO – Five people were hit by gunfire on Wednesday night in a drive-by shooting in southeast Fresno. The suspects are still at large.

The incident happened at a house near Nevada and Bend avenues, close to Roosevelt High School. Around 8:20 p.m., the Fresno Police Department received reports of shots fired. When officers arrived on the scene, they found three men and one woman who were wounded from the gunfire. One of the victims was reportedly hit in the neck, and two of the victims were hit in the arm. The other victim’s injuries were not disclosed.

The four victims were transferred to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment. Their injuries were considered non-life threatening, police said.

A fifth victim apparently showed up at the hospital later in the evening with a gunshot wound.

The victims were outside playing basketball when the shooting happened. Authorities said that an SUV drove past the house and returned to drive by again a second time. On the second pass, one of the occupants in the vehicle opened fire at the group playing basketball and then sped off.

“The vehicle has only been described as a silver Dodge Durango or similar type vehicle and it did flee the area,” Fresno Police Lt. Tom Rowe said. “Its whereabouts are presently unknown.”

Rowe said that police do not have a description of the suspect who opened fire and it is unknown how many people were in the vehicle. Police do not have a motive for the shooting and are investigating whether it was gang-related.
