DUI Driver who Killed Family on a Halloween Stroll Charged with Murder

LONG BEACH – A family of three, enjoying the holiday festivities while out on a Halloween night stroll, was run down and killed by a DUI driver. Carlo Adrian Navarro (dob 4/15/99) has been charged with vehicular manslaughter on 11/12/19, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
The 20-year-old man is accused of driving while intoxicated on 10/31/19 and crashing his vehicle into a family that was walking home from trick-or-treating at Country Club Drive and Los Cerritos Park Place.
The father, Joseph Awaida (30) succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead that night at a local hospital.
The mother, Raihan Faisal Dakhil Awaida (32), and their son Omar (3) were critically injured.
Little Omar died on Nov. 2nd and his mom died the next day as a result of extensive injuries from the crash.
“Navarro, of Long Beach, was charged in case NA113232 with three counts each of murder and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated,” said DA PIO Paul Eakins. “The charges include an allegation of causing death to multiple victims.”
Long Beach PD is conducting the ongoing investigation.
If convicted as charged, Navarro faces a possible maximum sentence of 45 years to life in state prison.
Prosecutors requested that he be held on no bail, prior to appearance at the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Long Beach Branch.
