A Del Norte County man has been arrested on outstanding warrants, probation violation, and other charges after a contentious standoff with the Sheriff’s Department last week.
Deputies tried to make contact with 56-year-old Ronald Berry on Wednesday, December 4, to which he reportedly responded by assaulting them with a Bobcat tractor and then barricading himself inside his residence near Moorehead Road.
The official standoff began at around 1 PM.
Authorities say Berry refused to cooperate and, after several hours, tear gas was deployed. Law enforcement personnel entered the residence but could not find Berry, whom they believe had made his way underneath the house via an access in the bedroom.
When they spotted him under the house, officers used more tear gas, bean bag rounds, and powdered pepper balls, all to no avail.
Finally, they shut off the power and cut their way under the house through the floor in the living room, which was when Berry finally decided to surrender.
He is now housed at the Del Norte County Jail.
