Gang Member Desperately Discarding Meth During Reckless-Driver Pursuit

POMONA – Major Crimes Task Force (MCTF) Officers attempted a traffic stop in the midnight hour of March 19th in the area of White and Monterey Avenues. A speeding vehicle with dark-tinted windows ramped up a swift Officer-pursuit.
“The suspect driver, who was later identified as Jose Luis Cabrera, a known gang member, failed to stop for Officers,” said MCTF Sergeant M. Medellin. “A vehicle pursuit of the suspect ensued as Cabrera drove recklessly throughout the city of Pomona.”
The Pomona parolee’s pursuit ended in the driveway of his residence. After a short struggle, Officers took the 28-year-old suspect into custody.
“It was learned that during the pursuit, Suspect Cabrera made desperate attempts to discard a large quantity of methamphetamine,” said Sgt. Medellin. “Traces of the drug residue was found spread about the inside of his car. Despite his actions, several grams of methamphetamine were recovered.”
One can only imagine what quantity of discarded meth ended up elsewhere before the arrest.
A subsequent search warrant served at the residence revealed a high-capacity gun magazine, body armor, three firearms, and several rounds of ammo. Seized methamphetamine and marijuana were recovered amongst packaging material – suggesting drug sales – accompanied by $3,280.00 in cash.
Cabrera has been charged with:
2800.2 PC – Felony Evading
3455 PC – Probation Violation
11378 H&S – Possession of a Controlled Substance for Sales.
“This is an on-going investigation,” said Sgt. Medellin. “Officers will be filing additional charges for the suspect(s) responsible for the items found as a result of the search warrant.”
Pomona PD’s MCTF is a specialized unit within the police department, responsible for suppressing gang violence, investigating drug offenses, and pursuing wanted persons. The team is comprised of two supervisors, five officers, and two additional officers from the California Highway Patrol – Baldwin Park Office.
