UNION CITY — A pair of vehicle burglary suspects were arrested by sheriff’s deputies responding to reported gunfire. The vehicle owner shot at the suspects, who allegedly attempted to run him over as they fled.
The incident began in Sunol, a rural unincorporated area of Alameda County on April 28. A resident interrupted a vehicle burglary in progress on the 32800 block of Palomares Road.
Someone heard gunfire and called the Sheriff’s Office shortly after 11 a.m. As deputies were responding, another person called, who reported he shot at burglars after they almost ran him over.
It seems the man confronted the suspects in action. He is believed to have acted in self-defense when he shot at their vehicle. No one was reported injured by gunfire.
Sheriff’s deputies apprehended both suspects about 10 miles away in Union City. They were pulled over and arrested at 12:46 p.m., near the intersection of Mission Boulevard and Decoto Road.
The driver Erik T. Ingles, 35 of Castro Valley, was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and vehicle burglary. As it happens, Ingles has several prior arrests for burglaries. In fact, Ingles was on probation for a burglary conviction.
His passenger, Marie J. Nicolo, 31 of San Leandro, was arrested for second degree burglary of a vehicle. Nicolo has several prior arrests for DUI alcohol/drugs and public intoxication.
Ingles and Nicolo remain in custody at Santa Rita Jail, pending arraignment on May 1.
