An international murder suspect was arrested in Monterey County last week, according to an official press release by the Sheriff’s Office.
The Investigations Division of the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office discovered that a local resident had what’s known as a Red Notice attached to his name.
A Red Notice is essentially an international arrest warrant; the individual in question can be provisionally arrested by any police agency in the world regardless of where the alleged crimes were committed.
The Sheriff’s Office confirmed with Homeland Security investigators that the Notice was for Raul Ramirez Perez, who is wanted on suspicion of murder in Mexico.
The two agencies coordinated a plan to get Perez into custody.
Earlier this week, he was seen being picked up from his home in Salinas. Investigators tailed the vehicle and conducted a traffic stop on the 400 block of North Sanborn Road. When they made contact with Perez, he reportedly gave a false name at first but eventually confirmed his identity.
Following his arrest, he was turned over to federal authorities for extradition back to Mexico.
