Sword-Wielding Suspect Investigation Prompts Community Notification

POMONA – On May 7th, Pomona PD released the following CommunityCritical Incident Community Briefing Video, with a warning. **The following information is based on a preliminary and ongoing investigation, which continues to evolve as investigators interview witnesses, review physical and electronic records, and analyze forensic evidence. The Department’s understanding of the facts and circumstances may change as additional evidence is collected and analyzed.**
It all began on 03/30/2020 at approximately 7:15pm, when Pomona Police Corporal Chad Jensen responded to a 9-1-1 call regarding a man who stated he was the victim of an Assault with a Deadly Weapon in the area of Reservoir St. and Third St. The victim stated the weapon used by the suspect was a sword.
The arriving Officer found the caller who’d sustained a laceration to the head. The victim pointed to the location of the suspect.
Corporal Jensen located the suspect, who was attempting to conceal himself behind some bushes. Upon making contact, the suspect produced a sword.
As a result, an Officer-Involved Shooting took place.”The suspect was struck by gunfire and Officers immediately called the Los Angeles County Fire Department to render medical aid to the suspect and victim, who was struck by the sword,” said Pomona PD.
The anonymous victim, who was taken to a local area hospital, is expected to make a full recovery. The suspect succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
“The incident was captured on the Officer’s body-worn-camera as well as the dashboard camera in the police vehicle,” said Pomona PD. “The Pomona Police Department remains committed to accountability and transparency- in use of force encounters and all situations.”
