Driver Allegedly Uses His Car as a Deadly Weapon to Murder a Bicyclist
SAN LEANDRO — A man with a lengthy criminal history now faces murder and several other felony charges. The suspect allegedly used his car as a deadly weapon to kill a bicyclist.
Ric D. Acosta, 38 of San Leandro, remains in custody since being arrested twice this month. Acosta is staying at Santa Rita Jail, with bond for release denied, pending a plea hearing on July 21.
Acosta allegedly left the scene of a fatal collision on June 28. It happened on Hesperian Boulevard near Drew Street in San Leandro. The victim, 52-year-old Mark Moore of San Lorenzo died of his injuries two days later. Multiple callers reported the collision to San Leandro police. Acosta was identified as the driver of a Lexus that struck the bicyclist.
The SLPD traffic division investigated and determined it was intentional and no accident.
On July 2, Acosta who was on probation for prior convictions was arrested on suspicion of murder and use of a deadly weapon.
While already in custody, Acosta was arrested again on July 7. His additional unrelated charges concern burglary, grand theft, receiving stolen property, and illegal cannabis cultivation.
Acosta is a frequent offender, incarcerated and sentenced to probation several times. Altogether, he has been arrested 22 times since 2014, including several times for assaults, burglaries and DUIs.
In 2019, Acosta was convicted for making criminal threats which would result in death or great bodily injury. Prior to that, he was convicted for second-degree commercial burglary in 2018.
Acosta was convicted twice in 2016. He was convicted once for assault likely to produce great bodily injury and once for alcohol-related reckless driving.
