Originally published as a Shasta County Sheriff press release –
“On Tuesday, March 16th, 2021, at approximately 7:40 AM, deputies with the Burney Enforcement Division responded to a report of gun shots in the area of Woods Avenue and Pine Street, Burney. The reporting party identified the suspect as Kyle Daniels Christie of Burney.
Christie, 33 years old, is a known felon and had an active arrest warrant for assault with a deadly weapon and elder abuse. Due to the close proximity of the Fall River Joint Unified School District office, the school was locked down and buses were diverted from the area.
Deputies arrived within minutes and began searching for Christie. It was also related Christie was with an unknown female. After several minutes of searching the area, deputies received reports that Christie was now at the Pit River Health Clinic in Burney and had assaulted a male subject, pointing the firearm at him. As deputies arrived at the clinic, employees reported that Christie was walking behind the Pit River Casino.
Deputies located Christie and the female, later identified as Katarina Castillo Richey, 28 years old, behind the Pit River Casino attempting to cross the Burney Creek. Deputies could see that Christie was still armed with the shotgun and was given commands to drop the firearm. After several moments, Christie threw the shotgun into the bushes and deputies were able to place Christie under arrest.
Richey attempted to flee the area while deputies were confronting Christie. She was apprehended by a deputy while running from the area.
Christie was booked at the Shasta County Jail on numerous weapons violations to include a felon being in possession of a firearm and ammunition, possession of a short-barreled shotgun, brandishing a firearm, resisting arrest, assault with a deadly weapon and PRCS violation. Additionally, Christie had felony arrest warrants issued the day prior for elder abuse, vehicle theft and assault with a deadly weapon on a criminal case investigated back in December of 2020.
Richey was booked at the Shasta County Jail on numerous weapons violations to include a felon being in possession of a firearm and ammunition, possession of a short-barreled shotgun, resisting arrest, possession of a controlled substance and parole violation.”
