Man Released from Jail Allegedly Carjacks a Jail Employee on his Way Out

DUBLIN — Upon his release from Santa Rita Jail, a man wasted no time getting himself arrested again. As he was leaving, the man allegedly carjacked a jailhouse employee. This resulted in a car chase by Alameda County Sheriff’s Office deputies and his re-arrest.
The 25-year-old daredevil, Luke E. Barbero was released from custody July 18. He had been arrested several hours earlier in a case involving theft of a laptop computer. Shortly after 10 p.m., Barbero fled from the jail, driving away in the stolen vehicle.
Deputies pursued Barbero from Dublin to Hayward, and then all the way back to Dublin. Barbero surrendered himself at the East County Hall of Justice. He was booked back into jail shortly afterward.
For his initial arrest July 18, Barbero faces charges for grand theft of personal property, and petty theft. For his re-arrest, Barbero faces more charges for carjacking, and committing an offense while on bail or personal recognizance.
In addition, he is accused of driving with a suspended license, and evading an officer with willful disregard of safety. This is a familiar pattern for Barbero who regularly finds himself behind bars.
He has prior arrests for trespassing by driving on private property. He was also previously arrested for grand theft of lost property.
Prior to these arrests, Barbero was arrested for fare evasion on BART. He was also previously arrested for possession of controlled substances. He was also arrested three times for driving under the influence of controlled substance.
