On the afternoon of May 21, 2021, Santa Maria resident 31-year-old Samantha Hoobyar was arrested following a head-on collision with another vehicle while traveling through the Santa Ynez Valley.
According to CHP spokesman Officer Keith Rogers, Hoobyar “failed to safely navigate around a right-hand curve in the road,” whereupon her vehicle collided with another driven by 69-year-old Santa Ynez resident Angelo Caciola.
Following the accident—in which Hoobyar, her 8-year-old daughter, and a passenger in Caciola’s vehicle sustained moderate injuries—Hoobyar was determined to have been “impaired by pharmaceuticals” and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs.
While out on bail, Hoobyar and a friend posted multiple GoFundMe pages seeking “donations for medical expenses” supported by the assertion that Caciola was at fault in the crash. Neither those pages nor the website posted with the same claims made any mention of Hoobyar’s arrest, her release on bail, her pending court appearances, or her prior eight CHP citations
“involving driving-related infractions.”
On July 20 th , the Santa Barbara District Attorney charged Hoobyar with a felony count of driving under the influence of drugs causing injury, willful cruelty to a child, and causing great bodily injury on multiple victims. Following those charges, she remains out on bail and is presumably driving on public highways.
