FREMONT — Two men have been arrested in connection with a shooting last month. The pair of suspects were apprehended July 29 near a freeway off-ramp following a police chase on Interstate 880.
The shooting occurred on Locke Court July 28 shortly before 3 p.m. The wounded victim was transported to a hospital for medical treatment and is expected to survive.
Detectives quickly identified the suspects deemed responsible. On July 29 at 7 p.m., detectives located them driving towards Hayward and attempted to stop them.
The suspects fled with Fremont detectives and police officers pursuing them. A tactical driving technique was used to bring the chase to a conclusion on Jackson Street, off I-880.
Fremont police said in a prepared statement. “Detectives effected a pursuit intervention technique maneuver, shortly after the pursuit was initiated.”
This involved using the rear of a police car to tap the front of the suspect’s fleeing Jeep. This maneuver caused the fleeing Jeep to turn sideways, causing the driver to lose control and stop.
The driver Reliezon Maham, 21 of Fremont, was booked into Santa Rita Jail. Bond for his release from jail was set at $5,000. Maham is scheduled to appear August 10 at the East County Hall of Justice for a plea hearing.
Maham is charged with assault with a semi-automatic firearm, causing great bodily injury, and five weapons-related charges. These include charges for carrying an unregistered loaded firearm.
His passenger Vimal N. Swamy, 20 of Union City was booked for carrying a loaded firearm and evading an officer. However, Swamy was subsequently only charged with evading an officer with disregard for safety. He was released with a notice to
appear in court.
