Auto Burglary Suspects Commit Another Burglary while Pursued by Police
NEWARK — Auto burglary suspects being pursued by police committed another auto burglary, before one suspect was arrested. Detectives are working to identify two other outstanding suspects associated with multiple auto burglaries.
One victim witnessed a vehicle burglary in progress at a Newark shopping center on Mowry Avenue earlier this month. The victim was able to provide police a partial license plate number and description of the suspect’s black Dodge Durango.
Acting on this information, detectives identified the suspect and set up surveillance of the suspect’s SUV. Detectives subsequently located it at another shopping center outside the city of Newark with three persons inside.
Assistance from other agencies was requested. While authorities were coordinating with other agencies, the suspects traveled through neighboring cities and ended up in Oakland. A perimeter was set up in Oakland by several agencies.
The three suspects fled on foot when authorities contacted them. However, one suspect was apprehended, Jamal Wright, 31 of Richmond, a felon on parole stemming from prior criminal convictions. Wright was booked at Santa Rita Jail for auto burglary.
When Wright was arrested, property believed to be stolen from at least eight victims was recovered. Detectives are still in the process of identifying other potential victims of vehicle burglaries.
The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information can contact Newark police detective Andrew Musantry at 510-578-4956 or email Andrew.Musantry@Newark.Org.
