On Thursday October 21st, 2021 at approximately 8:57 am, Redding Police responded to the report of a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian in the area of Pine Street and Shasta Street. While officers were responding to the area, information was provided that the vehicle involved had possibly fled and a male was down in the roadway.
Emergency and law enforcement personnel arrived on scene and contacted a 75-year-old male of Redding, in the road way suffering from a head injury. It was confirmed that the vehicle involved in the collision had fled prior to law enforcement arriving.
The 75-year-old male was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Redding with major injuries. As a result of his injuries the male was hospitalized. The investigation found that the pedestrian was crossing Shasta Street inside a marked crosswalk, and was struck by the pickup truck which failed to yield to the pedestrian in the crosswalk.
Officers were able to identify the vehicle and driver involved with assistance from video surveillance obtained from a nearby business.
On Wednesday October 27th, 2021 Redding Police located the driver of the vehicle at her residence and arrested her for hit and run causing great bodily injury. The driver was identified as Leona McCovey 33 years of Redding. McCovey was transported to the Shasta County Jail where she was booked. The case will be submitted to the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office for review.”
