Domestic violence suspects barricades himself with children inside home for 10 hours
A man was arrested last Tuesday, November 3rd, after allegedly assaulting his female partner, barricading himself and their two children inside their residence for nearly ten hours, and threatening police officers.
The woman was able to call police before she got out of the home, located in the 3200 block of Dakota Avenue in Costa Mesa. Officers arrived around 12:36 a.m. and attempted to persuade the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Tyler Nathan Thornton of Costa Mesa, to come out of the house. Instead, Thornton—who was in possession of registered firearms—threatened the officers and refused to comply with their commands.
Reinforcements, including a SWAT team and the K9 Unit, were called in for support, and crisis negotiators worked with Thornton through the night and following morning to effect his peaceful surrender and the safe exit of the two children inside with him. Nearby residents were advised to stay inside until the coast was clear.
Finally, at about 10:13 a.m. on November 4th, Thornton surrendered peacefully to police. “The two minors were found safe and sound inside the home, and they were returned to their mother,” states the release. “Inside the home, officers located one handgun, two long guns, and one airsoft replica gun.”
Thornton was taken into custody and booked at the Costa Mesa Police Department Jail for attempted homicide, felony domestic violence, felony child endangerment, and threatening a police officer.
“This matter will now be turned over to the Orange County District Attorney for review and charges,” according to the release. “CMPD will not be releasing the booking photo or any other identifying information about those involved in an effort to protect the identities of the victims.”
