PLEASANTON — A woman with a long arrest record crashed a stolen pickup truck prior to her latest arrest. This time she was nabbed at a commuter parking lot, near the I-680 freeway.
Sophia Ornelas, 30 of San Jose, was booked at Santa Rita Jail on January 6. She was arrested at the Pleasanton Park N Ride lot located at 7295 Johnson Drive.
Ornelas has been jailed eight times since 2013. Now Ornelas is implicated in a hit-and-run collision, which occurred January 6 at approximately 2:30 p.m.
Pleasanton officers were dispatched to look for a pickup truck reported stolen in East Palo Alto. They spotted it in Pleasanton traveling westbound on Bernal Avenue approaching I-680.
The driver refused to pull over when officers attempted a traffic stop. Instead, the truck sped away onto I-680 traveling northbound. Officers pursued it until the suspect began driving recklessly on the shoulder.
This pursuit was ended in the interest of public safety. Nevertheless, the driver of the stolen pickup truck managed to smash into a car. Fortunately, no serious injuries resulted.
When officers exited from I-680 onto Stoneridge Drive, they discovered the pickup had collided with a car. Ornelas purportedly fled from the scene before officers arrived.
She was located attempting to conceal herself in landscaping bushes. She was subsequently arrested for her eighth time since 2013.
Ornelas was booked for possession of a stolen vehicle, hit-and-run, and evading police. She has previous arrests for possession of ammunition, illicit drugs, vehicle theft, and possession of stolen property.
All seven of her prior arrests happened in Santa Clara County. This is the first time Ornelas has been arrested in Alameda County.
The investigation of this incident remains open. Anyone with information about the collision can call California Highway Patrol at 925-931-5100.
