With the current rise in prices at local area gas stations, the pursuit of fleeing suspects is undoubtedly a cost factor for the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Patrol Division.
According to SBSD Public Information Officer Raquel Zick, those costs weren’t a factor on the afternoon of January 7 th when deputies responded to a call for service “to investigate a suspicious vehicle that appeared to be involved in possible drug sales” on a Goleta residential street.
Upon arrival, deputies made contact with 33-year-old Goleta resident Alan Kilgore behind the wheel of a Jeep Cherokee. During the ensuing and undoubtedly brief conversation, Kilgore slyly provided them with a false name. As a matter of routine, deputies invited Kilgore to alight from the Jeep, at which point he hit the gas and drove off at a high rate of speed.
The chase was on as deputies pursued the Jeep northbound on U.S. 101. As they approached the El Capitan area’s construction zone, the pursuit was ended “in the interest of public safety.”
At that point, Kilgore was identified as having outstanding arrest warrants and the California Highway Patrol was notified of “a wanted vehicle” in their jurisdiction.
The CHP then “staged” on U.S. 101 and initiated a traffic stop…which Kilgore summarily ignored, failing to pull over as he raced down U.S. High 1 toward the City of Lompoc. CHP units pursued for a time, but also terminated their pursuit in the interests of public safety.
SBSD Air Support was called in to follow the Jeep as Kilgore “continued to drive recklessly” before coming to a stop at Riverbend Park. He and his passenger hopped out of the Jeep, commandeered a nearby Honda Accord, and once again drove off at a high rate of speed.
Undoubtedly running out of patience, a SBSD patrol unit then “intentionally rammed the Honda” and disabled it. Without further ado, deputies took Kilgore into custody. It was determined that his adult female passenger was “an unwilling participant and a suspected victim of kidnapping.”
Kilgore was transported to Santa Barbara County Jail, where hey were booked on multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, including kidnapping, vehicle theft, resisting, assault, and carjacking. He remains in custody on a no-bail hold.
