“We’d like to provide you with an update regarding a person with a gun near Watsonville High School this afternoon.
Some of you may already be aware of the incident as there is a post circulating on social media that captured the radio traffic related to this case.
Shortly after 12 p.m., officers responded to the area of WHS after receiving reports of a person with a gun near campus. The Santa Cruz County Anti-Crime Team (SCCACT) was already near the high school and was there in about two minutes. As they arrived, they saw three suspects running away. The school was placed on lockdown at this time. One of them ran towards the high school but was met by a campus security guard who managed to keep him off school grounds.
The other two runners were detained by SCCACT and WPD officers. A loaded gun, which we believed was tossed by one of the suspects, was also recovered. All three suspects were identified as Watsonville High Students and are expected to face charges.
It takes a village to keep our community safe– from the community member who reported the suspicious activity to the campus security guard who didn’t think twice about helping our officers— thank you!”
