Orange County man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, sexual assault
An Orange County man was recently arrested as the primary suspect in what police are calling a “sexually motivated” attempted murder.
Police say that, on September 9, detectives began surveillance as part of an investigation into a report filed the day before by a 19-year-old woman. Detectives gathered leads suggesting the suspect worked at a restaurant, and had taken a bus route in the area of Sunflower and Harbor Boulevards in Santa Ana, police said.
Undercover detectives eventually spotted a man matching the suspect’s description — including a black baseball cap with a Raiders logo that he’d been shown wearing in surveillance video — board a bus. A detective also got on the bus, and reportedly confirmed that it was the same suspect from the footage.
The suspect eventually got off the bus at the 600 block of South Harbor, where detectives took him into custody. He is identified as 23-year-old Eric Yiovani Oliveros-Chavez of Santa Ana.
Police say that they have since gathered more evidence that further implicates Oliveros-Chavez in the alleged crime. He remains in custody at the Orange County jail on suspicion of attempted murder, kidnapping, and assault with intent to commit a sex act. His bail is set at $1 million, police said.
