A man and a woman from Hesperia were arrested after an attempt to settle a loan debt turned into a violent altercation.
Cody Johnston and Vanessa Alvarez, both 31, were taken into police custody on Monday, September 26th, on a variety of charges, including child endangerment, assault with a deadly weapon, and criminal threats. The suspects may additionally face charges for narcotics possession, pending a decision from the District Attorney’s office.
The incident occurred at about 11 PM two days prior, outside a residence in the 14700 block of Eucalyptus Street, Hesperia. According to the Hesperia Sheriff’s Station, “Three victims… reported they mutually agreed to meet with the two suspects, Cody Johnston and Vanessa Alvarez, to settle a loan debt.”
Instead of a resolution, however, a fight broke out between the two parties. “Johnston produced a firearm, physically assaulted the three victims, and then discharged the firearm in a negligent manner toward the victims, who fled the area.”
Hesperia police obtained a search warrant for Johnston and Alvarez’s residence and served it on September 26th. The search yielded several illicit items, including narcotics and firearms. Police believe one of the firearms located was used by Johnston during the Saturday assault.
Both suspects were arrested and booked at the High Desert Detention Center. “A 5-year-old child in Johnston and Alverez’s care was removed from the home and released to the custody of Child Protective Services.”
Both Johnston and Alvarez face child endangerment charges. Johnston was also charged with assault with a deadly weapon and criminal threats.
