Escaped Fresno County Jail Inmate Caught
FRESNO – An escaped inmate spent one night on the run after escaping from a hospital he was being treated at, but was caught the next morning in downtown Fresno.
Robert Davis, 25, was originally arrested on Monday night on suspicion of vehicle theft and weapons charges, according to the Fresno County Jail. At the time of his arrest, he was on parole for grand theft after having been released from prison in May of this year.
On Tuesday, Davis told correctional officers that he had taken Ecstacy before he had been arrested. The officers transported him to the emergency room at Community Regional Medical Center for treatment. While waiting in the emergency room, Davis was unshackled by an officer so that he could use the restroom, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.
A few minutes later around 6:30 p.m., Davis was seen running from the bathroom with a correctional officer in pursuit. Davis managed to lose the officer just north of the hospital, around McKenzie and Thesta avenues. Fresno County sheriff’s deputies, Fresno police officers and hospital security officers spent the night searching for the escaped inmate.
Early Wednesday morning, the sheriff’s department received an anonymous tip that Davis was hiding at a residence. When deputies arrived at the location, they learned that Davis knew they were coming and had fled the scene.
Deputies then learned that Davis might be at an apartment complex on Divisadero Street near downtown Fresno. They searched the complex by going apartment to apartment, and eventually found Davis hiding in an attached garage next door to the complex, according to the sheriff’s office.
In addition to taking Davis back into custody, deputies also arrested a 23-year-old man on charges of harboring a fugitive.
