ANTIOCH — Officers responding to a report of a robbery stabbing victim arrested the alleged perpetrator in less than 10 minutes. The suspect 29-year-old Hakeem Z. Thomas is being held in custody in lieu of $580,000 bond.
On the morning of October 4, police were dispatched to the Smart & Final supermarket at 2638 Sommersville Road. Witnesses reported the suspect fled from the area, leaving the victim lying on the ground.
Officers found the 58-year-old victim suffering from a knife wound in his chest. Officers gave first aid until the victim was transported to a hospital trauma center. Thomas, across the street from the crime scene, was pointed out by witnesses. He fled running through the hills between Fairview Avenue and Buchanan Road. Standing 5 feet 9 inches tall weighing 250 pounds, Thomas soon stopped running but he refused to drop a knife. He seemingly taunted police by telling them to shoot him.
In a prepared statement Antioch police said. “Officers used a less lethal projectile, as a distraction, and Thomas finally dropped the knife. He surrendered without being injured.”
Thomas was arrested at 11 a.m. and he was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility. He faces charges for attempted murder, robbery, and assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury.
