Redding police K9 Officer Otto recently made two arrests within twenty-four hours of each other, according to media releases by Redding PD.

Najar

The first was an early morning call regarding a burglary in progress on the 2900 block of Lake Redding Drive. Shortly before 4:30 AM on Sunday, November 6, residents called police to report they’d awoken to the sound of glass breaking. The residents soon discovered an unknown man had entered their home, police said.

The suspect — later identified as 44-year-old Xavier Najar of Redding — reportedly tried to flee over a backyard fence. He was ultimately detained as he tried to flee toward the Sacramento River Trail.

K9 Officer Otto assisted with the arrest, as Najar reportedly became uncooperative. He was later treated for minor injuries sustained during the arrest and ultimately booked on suspicion of burglary, vandalism, prowling, and resisting arrest.

Whitley

Later, just before 9 o’clock that evening, officers responded to a reported theft at the Walgreens on Eureka Way. A store employee reported that a man identified as 35-year-old Andrew Whitley had stolen numerous items and fled the store, police said.

Officers soon located Whitley on the corner of Eureka Way and Court Street and attempted to arrest him, but he became uncooperative, allegedly trying to flee, resisting arrest, and kicking an officer multiple times, police said.

Whitley ultimately had to be subdued with the help of K9 Officer Otto. After being medically cleared, Whitley was booked at the Shasta County jail on suspicion of theft, trespassing, resisting arrest, and parole violation.
