Suspect Identified in Cable Theft that Caused Comcast Outages in Two Counties
Marysville police have announced the arrest of a vandalism suspect allegedly responsible for Comcast outages across two counties.
26-year-old Javier Chacon was identified as the suspect in the theft of a large cable on the morning of Wednesday, November 2. The cable belonged to Comcast and its removal led to phone and internet outages across Yuba and Nevada Counties, police said.
It is unclear where exactly the cable was stolen from, though police say it was from an area near the Yuba County Sheriff’s Office.
The investigation began around 7 AM when police were initially called to the area of East 11th and Ramirez Streets, where two individuals were reportedly seen dragging copper wire. A few hours later, police learned of the cable theft and subsequent outages.
The theft resulted in an estimated $100,000 in damages, police said.
Police searched the area and eventually located a man they identified as Chacon, who was reportedly in possession of a large amount of cut wire. He was soon identified as the suspect in the cable theft from earlier, mistakenly believing that the wiring inside was made of copper, police said.
Chacon was arrested on suspicion of felony vandalism, grand theft, and felony malicious injury to communication lines. He was booked at the Yuba County jail.
