Yuba County Jail to Scan Every Individual Entering Facility after Inmate Death from Fentanyl
The Yuba County Sheriff’s Department has announced plans for enhanced screening of anyone entering the county jail facility after an inmate recently died of a fentanyl overdose.
The Department said in a Facebook press release that, beginning in 2023, they will be implementing a new body scanner “for every individual who enters the facility.”
Such measures are being taken as a result of the death of Matthew D. Perez on November 2, 2022. Perez had been an inmate at the facility.
Corrections officers were alerted to an inmate in distress and provided emergency medical treatment while waiting for EMTs. Responding EMTs attempted multiple life-saving efforts, including several doses of Narcan. Perez was then transported to Adventist Health and Rideout in Marysville, where he was ultimately pronounced deceased.
A toxicology report later confirmed that Perez had died of fentanyl poisoning, the Sheriff’s Department said.
The Sheriff’s Department also iterated that they do not know how the substance made it into the facility, hence the increased security measure.
