Portable radar unit stolen from SLOPD motorcycle unit
The San Luis Police Department is asking the public for help with information regarding a missing portable radar unit.
According to SLOPD, officers were responding to an emergency call for service of several people reported to be involved in a physical fight at 55 Stenner about 2:40 a.m. on Sunday. Officers soon arrived on the scene, including members of the SLOPD motorcycle unit.
While officers were attempting to determine if anyone was injured, and investigate the area for any potential crimes, one of the officers parked a motorcycle and left it unattended for a short period of time. Police say during this time an unknown suspect or suspects took a LIDAR, portable radar equipment, from a pouch attached to the police motorcycle.
LIDAR’s are hand held units utilized by law enforcement officers for speed enforcement. According to SLOPD, the LIDAR is manufactured by Laser Technologies and is an Ultra Lyte model valued at over $2,500. Police say possession of this unit by unauthorized persons is a felony.
