OAKLAND — Police arrested a suspect who allegedly bludgeoned another man to death in a blighted area of West Oakland. The victim perished near the intersection of Adeline Street and 21st Street.
Officers were dispatched January 8 shortly after 10:15 a.m. to investigate a report that a robbery occurred. The incident turned out to be a gruesome homicide, which may have occurred during a robbery.
Responding officers found a severely injured man suffering from blunt-force injuries. First aid was provided, but unfortunately the victim was pronounced dead at the scene, soon thereafter.
The homicide victim was 63-year-old Anthony Bradley who resided in Oakland. Video evidence shows the suspect standing over him, while repeatedly punching and kicking his head. This happened after the two men fought over a bag containing something unidentified.
Investigators from the OPD Homicide Section took over the investigation surrounding the circumstances of Bradley’s death. They quickly identified the suspected murderer, as 23-year- old DeShaughn D. Johnson, a resident of Oakland.
On January 9 at 12 p.m., Johnson was arrested at his home and later booked into Santa Rita Jail. Due to the nature of the crime, he is ineligible for release on bond. He is charged with murder, in addition to committing violence or bodily harm. Johnson is scheduled to appear for a plea hearing on January 25. He is no stranger to law enforcement. Johnson has prior arrests on his record for assault with a deadly weapon, robbery, and battery.
