The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office has reportedly arrested five people in connection to the beating death of a Redding man back in October of 2022.
Deputies had responded in the early morning hours of Saturday, October 8, to the area of Lake Boulevard and Construction Way in Redding, where an unknown disturbance had been reported, the Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.
At the scene, deputies located a man — later identified as 34-year-old Alex Stevens — severely injured from what appeared to have been a possible assault. Stevens was transported to an area hospital for treatment, but ultimately passed away on October 18th.
Investigators soon determined that Stevens had been at a gathering inside an industrial building on the night of October 7th, where he was later found by deputies, and that he had likely been assaulted by multiple individuals.
Evidence gathered during a search warrant executed on October 19th reaffirmed this suspicion, and detectives soon identified five suspects in the assault: Robert Samual Schmidt (36), Tyler Robert Ybarra (35), Randy Lee Taylor (57), Cameron William Wagner (34), and Nathan Charles Roby (32).
On October 20th, an autopsy concluded that Stevens had died of head injuries and ruled his death a homicide. Arrest warrants were issued for the five suspects shortly thereafter.
On January 19th of this year, Schmidt was located and arrested on suspicion of murder, assault with a deadly weapon with force, and aggravated battery.
On January 20th, Ybarra was arrested on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter. Three days later, on January 23rd, detectives arrested Taylor as an accessory to aggravated battery. The next day, January 24th, Wagner was arrested on the same charge.
The final arrest came on January 28th, with Roby also being arrested on suspicion of accessory to aggravated battery.
All remain in custody at the Shasta County jail.
