Fresno Police Shoot, Injure Bulldog Gang Member

FRESNO – A Fresno Bulldog gang member is in the hospital after Fresno police opened fire on him on Monday night.

Two Fresno police officers with the Southeast District Crime Suppression Team were in the area of Chestnut Avenue near Mono Avenue when they spotted a Bulldog gang member on a bicycle who had been reportedly dealing drugs at a nearby motel. The officers attempted to stop the suspect, but he began peddling faster in an attempt to get away.

The suspect ended up ditching his bike in the front yard of a home in the 4800 block of East Mono Avenue and attempted to get inside the house. When he was unable to break in, he began running away on foot. It was at this point that the shooting took place.

“(The suspect) reached down toward his waistband area and one officer, fearing for his safety, fired shots at the suspect, did strike him, and he went down at the scene,” said Dennis Bridges with the Fresno Police Department.

The 37-year-old suspect, whose identity has not been released, was transported to Community Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Authorities say the suspect is an ex-parolee with a history of drug possession. Two weeks ago, a citizen contacted the police with complaints that the suspect was armed with a gun and was always carrying drugs and selling them, police said. The suspect also was wanted on an arrest warrant for resisting and delaying officers.

Investigators are still searching for a possible gun carried by the suspect. They did find a bag of methamphetamine at the scene and are trying to determine if it belonged to the suspect.

This is Fresno’s ninth officer-involved shooting this year.
