California Highway Patrol Investigates Fatal Shooting on I-880 in Fremont

Detectives from the California Highway Patrol’s Golden Gate Division are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on Saturday, April 8th, 2023, on Interstate 880 (I-880) in Fremont. According to reports, at approximately 6:40 PM, a CHP officer assigned to the San Jose Area office was conducting a traffic enforcement stop on I-880 in the Fremont vicinity when victims of a freeway shooting approached him, informing him that a child in their vehicle had been struck by gunfire. The five-year-old female was transported to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased.
CHP officers from multiple CHP Area offices responded to the scene and assisted CHP detectives in securing and processing the crime scene. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and CHP detectives are urging the public to come forward with any information that could assist in their investigation.
In a statement, CHP Golden Gate Division Chief, Ernie Sanchez, said, “The California Highway Patrol extends our deepest sympathies to the family of the victim in this tragic incident. Our detectives are working diligently to bring those responsible for this senseless act to justice. We urge the public to come forward with any information that could assist us in our investigation.”
