On June 10, 2023, Ventura County Sheriff’s Department deputies working out of the Camarillo Patrol station responded to an incident at St John’s Pleasant Valley Hospital involving a male victim who had sustained lacerations to his neck.
The male victim, whose injuries required reported that the attack occurred at his home at the hands of 41-year-old Camarillo resident Grant Rhodes. According to VCSD spokesman Sgt. Jacob Holt, the assault upon the victim—“requiring several stitches to address his injuries”—was allegedly unprovoked, as Rhodes ruthlessly slashed the victim’s neck multiple times using a box cutter.
The immediately ensuing investigation, coordinated by the Camarillo Special Enforcement Unit and the Ventura County Major Crimes Bureau, led to round-the-clock attempts to locate Rhodes which were unsuccessful until, on June 11th, Rhodes himself contacted the detectives and expressed a desire to meet them at the Camarillo Police Station. Once Rhodes showed up at the police station, he was taken into custody and transported to Ventura County Jail, where he was booked on charges of attempted murder under California Penal Code section 664/187. Subsequently, a search warrant was executed at Rhodes’ residence, during which “incriminating evidence pertaining to the crime” was discovered and seized by detectives.
