A man has been arrested after reportedly leading deputies on a high-speed pursuit in rural Kings County.

According to a press release by the Kings County Sheriff’s Office, a driver led law enforcement on a high-speed pursuit in rural Kings County in the early hours of Sunday, July 9. The incident began when a Deputy attempted to stop a Chevrolet Avalanche for a mechanical violation and expired vehicle registration at the intersection of 17th Avenue and Jersey Avenue.

The driver, later identified as Santana Yanez, refused to pull over and instead accelerated, initiating a pursuit. While fleeing from law enforcement, Yanez allegedly ran multiple stop signs and reached speeds of up to 80 miles per hour.

The chase lasted several miles until Yanez abruptly left the road on the 16500 block of 15th Avenue, driving into a field. The pursuing deputy temporarily lost sight of the Avalanche, but assistance from the Kings County Air Unit (Air 1) helped direct deputies to the location of the abandoned vehicle.

Upon inspection, authorities reportedly found a single set of footprints leading away from the vehicle. A perimeter was established, and Santana Yanez was discovered hiding under a brush pile near a canal, approximately half a mile away.

Following a records check, it was determined that Yanez had two active warrants in Kings County, with charges including DUI and driving without a license. In addition to the outstanding warrants, Yanez now faces new charges of evading and resisting arrest.

Santana Yanez was subsequently booked into the Kings County jail, with a combined bail amounting to $145,000.
