Kings County Man Who Led High-Speed Pursuit Reportedly Claims It Was a Bathroom Emergency

“On Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at approximately 12:38 PM, a Deputy was on patrol traveling west on Highway 198 near 10th Avenue. The Deputy spotted a motorcycle approaching from behind at a high rate of speed. As the motorcycle neared the patrol unit it slowed down to the speed the patrol unit was going. The motorcycle was close enough to the Deputy that the Deputy was able to see the clothing the rider was wearing. As the Deputy approached 12th Avenue, the Deputy switched lanes to take the 12th Avenue exit. The motorcycle driven by Devante Vaugh Hicks accelerated and sped past the Deputy continuing west. The Deputy estimated Devante was traveling over 100 miles per hour. The Deputy activated the patrol car lights and siren and a pursuit ensued.
The Deputy chased Devante who was speeding at 130 miles per hour. Kings County Air Support Unit (Air1) was in the area patrolling in the skies over Kings County. Air1 tracked Devante as he weaved in and out of traffic on Highway 198. Devante exited off Highway 198 and took the Lemoore D Street off ramp. He continued to speed, failed to stop for stop signs and passed other vehicles over double yellow lines. Devante gained distance on the pursing Deputy, however, he could not outrun Air1 who continued to track his every movement.
Air1, tracked Devante as he rode into the parking lot of an apartment complex. The Tactical Flight Officer (TFO) relayed to responding Deputies that Devante placed his motorcycle into a garage and entered a nearby apartment. Deputies along with Officers from the Lemoore Police Department knocked on the door and ordered Devante to come out. After a few minutes, Devante answered the door wearing the same clothes which the Deputy recognized, and Devante was placed into custody.
During an interview, Devante admitted to trailing the Deputy and speeding up once the Deputy switched lanes. Devante stated he had to use the restroom which was the reason why he was going too fast.
Devante was booked into Kings County Jail on the charges of evading, fleeing in the opposite lane of traffic, exhibition of speed and reckless driving. His bail was set at $50,000. He posted bail and was released.”
