Fairfield police search stores suspected of illegal gambling

Fairfield police served two search warrants at two computer gaming businesses on Tuesday.

According to the Daily Republic, police served the warrants, both in connection of suspected illegal gambling, at about 2:30 p.m. at Cyberboss and One Stop Business Center. Both businesses are located on the 1700 block of North Texas Street. The alleged criminal activity at the stores does not seem to be connected to each other, Lt. Greg Hurlbut said.

According to the Daily Republic, the warrants were served after a month-long investigation of the businesses and proceeding complaints about the alleged activity. Customers allegedly paid the stores for a card that could be used to access a computer, but were also using the cards to access keno or slot machines. Any winnings would be recorded onto the card and subsequently returned in exchange for cash, Lt. Hurlbut said.

Computers, digital routers, and proceeds believed to have come from the illegal gambling were seized from both locations. Police also arrested customers for unrelated offenses such as outstanding arrest warrants.

According to the Daily Republic, there has been a crackdown on similar alleged activity throughout the state, though this is the first Lt. Hurlbut said he has seen of such activity in Fairfield.
