Shasta County Man Arrested for Allegedly Assaulting, Firing Gun at Partner

A Shasta County man has reportedly been arrested in connection with an alleged domestic violence incident last week.

According to a press release by the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office, 61-year-old Kenneth Duane Berg was arrested as the primary suspect in an alleged domestic violence incident in Shingletown late on the afternoon of Thursday, October 19.

That afternoon, deputies had responded to a report of shots fired on the 7400 block of Brett Road. The reporting party, identified as a friend of the victim, told deputies that the victim had called her for help, alleging that Berg had assaulted her, and that she’d gone to the residence to pick the victim up. As the two were leaving, Berg allegedly engaged them in an argument, followed them outside as they left, and fired a shot from a firearm at them.

Deputies made contact with the victim and noted that she had physical injuries that were consistent with having been assaulted. They then traveled to the Brett Road residence to speak with Berg, who was reportedly confrontational and challenged deputies to a fight, necessitating the deployment of K-9 Deputy Kilo. Berg was soon thereafter taken into custody.

Deputies then searched the residence and reportedly discovered numerous firearms, including an assault rifle, and high-capacity magazines.

Berg was transported to an area medical center for treatment of injuries sustained during his arrest. He is then slated to be booked at the Shasta County jail on suspicion of corporal injury to a spouse or cohabitant, criminal threats of death or great bodily injury, delaying or obstructing a peace officer, possession of a large-capacity magazine, and possession of an assault weapon.

It was unclear at press time whether Berg had retained an attorney. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
