Were it not for the ongoing epidemic of gang violence within their community, members of the Oxnard Police Department might be able to enjoy the city’s wide streets, predominantly quiet neighborhoods, and its wide sandy beaches.
Unfortunately, not many on-duty OPD officers get a chance to enjoy the city’s beachfront amenities because they’re constantly reacting to the violent influence of criminal street gangs calling Oxnard their home. Evidence of that came once again on June 25th of this year when a 911 Emergency call send black-and-white units to the scene of a reported shooting.
According to the OPD Watch Commander, responding officers were informed by witnesses that four individuals seated inside a parked car “were confronted” the the driver of a Jeep who “exited the Jeep armed with a handgun and fired several shots at the occupied vehicle.” With bullets slamming into their vehicle, the four victims “fled the scene” and promptly crashed into a parked car before careening into a fire hydrant.
The four passenger-victims were found to be uninjured as responding officers immediately initiated their investigation into the incident. Once video surveillance records of the incident were obtained and “several shell casings” were recovered from the scene, detectives with the OPD Violent Crimes Unit took over the investigation.
More than four months later, pursuant to the service of multiple search warrants and witness reports, detectives identified 18-year-old Oxnard resident Andres Aguilar as the shooter.
On November 2nd, the Violent Crimes Unit, working with the OPD K9 Team, made contact with Aguilar and took him into custody without incident. He was transported to Ventura County Jail, where he was booked on multiple firearms charges and on a charge of attempted murder. He remains in custody with his bail set at $1,000,000.
