Carjacker runs into pedestrian, possibly intentionally
What looked like a typical carjacking quickly escalated into an attempted murder in Lomita October 18th. Los Angeles County Sheriffs arrested 34-year-old Ignacio Perez in connection to those crimes, but not before an intense search and struggle occurred.
Deputies were first called to the 25800 block of Appian Way after a woman reported that a Hispanic man forcibly took her Toyota Siena and drove toward the intersection of 259th Street and Walnut Street.
He subsequently appeared to deliberately drive over the sidewalk and strike a man standing near the doorway of a local business in the 1800 block of the Pacific Coast Highway. After hitting the man with the vehicle, the suspect abandoned the car near Western Avenue and 256th Street.
He was seen by witnesses in the neighborhood jumping from rooftop to rooftop in the area of the 1600 block of 256th Street. Deputies eventually found the suspect, who the later identified as Perez, hiding under a trailer. While initially refusing to come out, even after being pepper sprayed, Perez eventually complied after officers used a taser.
Perez was booked at the Lomita Station where he was charged with Attempted Murder and Carjacking and is being held in lieu of a $500,000 bail. The victim that was struck by the vehicle that Perez had stolen was taken to a local hospital where he is currently in critical condition.
The LASD did not respond to requests to comment on the incident.
