Santa Monica Police arrest assault suspect
Santa Monica police have arrested 36-year-old Brandon Cross of Chino as a suspect in the assult and rape of a woman jogger.
According to a press release, a woman was jogging early in the morning of October 10 along the beach in the area of Lifeguard tower #8. At approximately 4:50 am, she was assaulted physically and sexually by a man. She eventually fought her attacker off and ran away, while he walked from the scene. The victim provided a full description of her assailant, and police artists created a composite sketch of the man.
A week later, at 5:30 in the morning, Pier/Harbor officers who were patrolling the North beach area saw a man who matched the description in the same general area where the assault took place. Cross was detained, and after further investigation, was arrested as a suspect.
Last Friday, after a review of the case with the police investigators, the LA County District Attorney’s office filed one count of attempted murder, two counts of forcible rape, one count of sexual penetration by a foreign object, one count of assault by means likely to produce great bodily injury, and one count of resisting arrest. His bail was set at $1,350,000.
The investigation is still ongoing, and investigators have reason to believe this may not have been an isolated event. They are asking anyone with information, or who may have also been a victim to contact Detective Phillip DeRyck at 310-458-8944 or Sergeant Darrick Jacob at 310-458-8460. The Santa Monica police may also be contacted 24-hours-a-day at 310-458-8495.
