The La Jolla Canyon Trail running along U.S Highway 1 is among the more picturesque routes running through the California State Park on the coast of Camarillo. As scenic as it is, the area is also notably rustic and difficult from a terrain standpoint. It’s not a common location for criminal activity, but when suspicious folks act suspiciously, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department is summoned to the scene.
According to VCSD spokesman Sgt. Adam Garnier, on the morning of January 23rd , such activity was observed by a Park Ranger who alerted deputies to an individual in a vehicle apparently under the influence of a controlled substance. A deputy attached to the Camarillo Police Department responded and made contact with 40-year-old Sean Briseno. It was quickly determined that Briseno was a convicted felon and that he displayed “symptoms of recent drug use.”
A search of Briseno’s person and vehicle led to the discovery of “a loaded and operable P-80 pistol tucked in his waistband” along with “163 grams of methamphetamine, 80 grams of marijuana, digital scales, police scanners, narcotics paraphernalia, and a significant amount of United States currency,” all indices of ongoing narcotics sales.
Briseno was taken into custody and transported to Ventura County Jail, where he was booked on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm, being a felon in possession of ammunition, illegal transfer of a firearm, possession of narcotics with a firearm, possession of controlled substance for sale, and being under the influence of a controlled substance with a firearm. He remains in custody on a no-bail hold.
