That is a cautionary reality that may have been ignored by 34-year-old Santa Barbara resident Salvador Jiminez at 2:00 a.m. on February 24th when he slammed into a motor scooter being ridden by 28-year-old Santa Barbara resident Dane August.

According to Santa Barbara Police Department Public Information Officer Ethan Ragsdale, the accident quickly brought a Santa Barbara Police Patrol unit to the scene, where responding officers discovered “the scooter rider lying in the road.” The cops, firefighters, and paramedics all “attempted life-saving measures,” but August was pronounced “dead at the scene.”

Notably absent from the scene was the driver of the vehicle that struck August, whereupon SBPD’s Traffic Section and Detectives went to work and soon identified Jimenez and his passenger, 26-year-old Estefani Nava Guerrero in connection with the fatal accident. Some 18 hours later on the evening of February 24th both Guerrero and Jimenez were located and arrested. Jimenez as determined to have been driving on a suspended license, while Guerrero was suspected of “destruction of evidence.”

Both Guerrero and Jimenez were transported to Santa Barbara County Jail, where she was booked as an accessory to a felony with her bail set at $20,000 and he was booked on a charge of felony hit-and-run with his bail set at $500,000.
