Suspect Held in Custody in Lieu of $600,000 Bond for a Shooting Last Summer

EL CERRITO —With help from the San Pablo police SWAT team, El Cerrito officers apprehended a suspect for a shooting last summer. A judge signed a Ramey Warrant to arrest the man and a warrant to search his residence.

Police arrested Walter F. Martinez, 47, of San Pablo, at his home on April 15. He was taken into custody at 5:10 a.m. Martinez was later booked into the nearby Martinez Detention Facility. He remains in custody in lieu of combined $600,000 bond for the arrest and charges.

In a prepared statement El Cerrito police said. “Detectives located a loaded firearm and other evidence linking him to the crime.”

The shooting incident occurred during the evening of August 4. Officers responded to a report of gunfire in the vicinity of San Pablo Avenue and Moeser Lane. Shell casings were found scattered on the ground, but no victim was located at that time.

Witnesses told police that the suspect fired multiple shots at a passing vehicle before running away from the scene. Detectives later identified and spoke with the victim targeted by the gunfire. Fortunately, the victim was able to drive away without being injured.
