An inmate at a Calaveras County jail is reportedly set to face new charges for allegedly attacking correctional staff.
According to a press release by the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office, a physical altercation broke out on Saturday, April 20, between an inmate — identified as Casey James Martin, 33 — and correctional staff after Martin allegedly refused verbal instructions to return to his cell.
Correctional staff attempted multiple times to persuade Martin to return to his cell peacefully, but Martin allegedly became more aggressive. Even after the correctional staff attempted to use a taser, Martin was unfazed and allegedly continued to fight the correctional staff.
At one point, Martin allegedly struck a staff member with a closed fist, knocking them to the floor, then got on top of them and continued to strike them, allegedly stating he was going to kill the staff member.
Correctional officers ultimately resorted to the use of batons to stop the assault. Officers were able to subdue Martin and return him to his cell.
One of the correctional officers suffered an unspecified “traumatic injury” during the ordeal, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Martin is now reportedly expected to face new charges of mayhem, obstructing or resisting an officer, battery on a police officer with injury, and criminal threats.
