“Earlier this week, Nevada City Police Officers were dispatched to a victim who was being blackmailed through cyber fraud. The victim had received a pop-up notification on her computer posing as tech support that advised illegal material was present and needed to be removed. The victim paid the suspect a large sum of cash to remove the material. Several days later, the suspect again contacted the victim and asked for more funds to remove illegal material. Thankfully, the victim contacted the police, and we were able to arrest one of the suspects, identified as San Jose resident Zhiheng Yang, who arrived at the house to collect the funds. Yang was booked on felony charges.
Please be aware that cyber fraud is genuine and far more common than most people believe. The Nevada City Police Department is always available, and if you suspect any form of fraud, you can always reach out to the department for assistance.”
