Authorities in Calaveras County have arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder at a campground on the Lake Comanche South Shore.

In a press release, the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office announced that Ismael Viveros, 28, has been identified as the prime suspect in connection with a shooting at the Moccasin campgrounds on the night of Saturday, June 8.

A deputy had been patrolling the crowded campgrounds when he reportedly heard a gunshot. Sheriff’s Office dispatch then began receiving multiple reports of an incident at space 147.

The victim in the incident told the deputy that he’d gotten into an argument with Viveros over a minor vehicle accident, and that Viveros produced a handgun, pointed it at the victim, and threatened to kill him.

Viveros allegedly fired one round toward the victim, causing the victim and other campers to run for cover, and fled the area.

Deputies from Amador County and officers from the California Highway Patrol responded to the scene to help locate Viveros due to the large search area. Authorities ultimately found Viveros near the front gate, trying to leave in a vehicle.

Authorities arrested Viveros on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, felony criminal threats, and felony participating in a criminal street gang.

Due to the severity of the alleged offenses, Viveros was deemed ineligible for bail on a “no bail” enhancement, the Sheriff’s Office said.
