SAUSALITO — A deliveryman has been arrested on suspicion of starting four fires in Sausalito. Nicholas Mejia, a San Francisco resident who turns 59 on June 21, was arrested outside a residence near Alexander Avenue in Sausalito.

Police arrested Mejia on June 12 at 11:54 a.m. Mejia is a repeat offender. He remains in custody at Marin County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bond.

He faces arson charges involving four fires occurring during the morning of June 12.

 The first blaze reported was at 10:38 a.m., a brush fire near Bridgeway and Marinship Way.

 A second fire happened 20 minutes later at Sausalito Yacht Harbor, where a trash can was set

alight.

 A half hour later a third fire started near Second Street and Sausalito Boulevard. A waste bag

was set on fire inside a carport.

 The fourth and most dangerous fire occurred on Alexander Avenue, near East Road. This fire was spreading fanned by strong wind gusts.

The Marin County Fire Department quickly extinguished all the fires. A prepared statement from the Sausalito police said. “No injuries were reported, and no structures were damaged, as a result of these fires.”

With fires occurring in the same area and moving southward, officers searched the vicinity, while collecting evidence. A police lieutenant saw Mejia, a familiar troublemaker, and questioned him. Mejia made incriminating statements and he was carrying evidence of arson.

Since 2017 Mejia has been arrested a dozen times. His prior arrests involved illicit drug possession, receiving a stolen motor vehicle, among other offenses.
