Armed Robbery Suspect Allegedly Rams a Stolen Car Into a Pursuing Police Car

OAKLAND — An armed robbery suspect was arrested after allegedly ramming a stolen car into an Oakland police car during a pursuit. The collision occurred on June 14 near Foster Avenue and Bernhardt Drive, alongside the Interstate 880 freeway wall.
OPD officers attempted to stop a vehicle associated with a robbery in neighboring San Leandro. The fleeing suspect was wanted for robbing a smoke shop. Approximately $400 in cash was stolen. Instead of stopping safely the suspect crashed into a patrol car shortly before 10:30 a.m.
The suspect identified as Christopher Cardenas, a 26-year-old resident of Oakland, had passengers with him. He was accompanied by a woman and three children between the ages of 10 and 15. Fortunately, no one was injured because of the collision.
Oakland police arrested Cardenas for assault with a deadly weapon—but not a firearm. He was arrested also for child endangerment. San Leandro police subsequently arrested Cardenas for robbery, receiving a stolen motor vehicle, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Multiple charges were filed June 17 against Cardenas. His charges include second-degree robbery, and child abuse. Cardenas also faces additional charges for receiving stolen property, and second-degree burglary of a vehicle.
The suspect is frequently in trouble with the law. Cardenas has prior convictions for carrying an unregistered loaded firearm, and unlawful driving or taking of a vehicle. Since July 2020, Cardenas has been arrested 15 times for vehicle thefts, weapons-related charges, among other offenses.
