Suspect in Custody In Lieu of $80,000 Bond for Stabbing of a Sandwich Shop Owner

CLAYTON — Peter F. Kerns, a 45-year-old resident of Clayton, has been arrested in connection with a stabbing attack last month. Kerns remains behind bars at the Martinez Detention Facility in lieu of $80,000 bond.
The stabbing happened downtown at Canesa’s Brooklyn Heros, a sandwich shop at 6026 Main Street. It seems an argument between the suspect and victim escalated to violence during the lunch rush. John Canesa, 44, owner of the sandwich shop, suffered multiple stab wounds. Clayton officers responded to the sandwich shop on June 25 shortly after 1 p.m. Both Kerns and Canesa were there when the police arrived.
Clayton police said in a prepared statement. “The victim, who was alert and speaking, was treated for multiple stab wounds and transported to John Muir Medical Center.” He was treated for his injuries and later released from the hospital.
Officers placed Kerns under arrest at 1:06 p.m. He was booked for assault with a deadly weapon/assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury.
The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office filed two charges against Kerns on June 27. Kerns is charged with assault with a deadly weapon PC 245 (A). In addition, Kerns is also charged with a special enhanced allegation for causing great bodily injury PC 12022.7 (A). His next scheduled court appearance is July 10.
